Night checks · Free for up to 5 checkpoints

Every night check, on the record.

Overnight staff walk the halls every hour and initial a sheet. Put a QR code in each hall, wing and exit instead. A scan logs who checked and when, a missed round emails the on-call manager, and staff working alone have an SOS button.

Jordan's phone scans the QR code at each checkpoint in turn, and each scan logs a visit. At Back door, one reports: Found unlocked.

Night checks

The overnight shift, made visible.

Nights are when checks slip and nobody's watching. A sheet of initials says a check happened. A scan shows when, where and who, and an empty hour can't be filled in at 6 AM.

PatrolBadges records that a check happened, not anything about a resident. Name checkpoints after places, not people.

Staff working alone are safe
One-tap SOS with location, and an alert if they go quiet too long.

How it works

Set up in minutes, from your phone.

No readers, no wands and no app to roll out. If your people can take a photo, they can scan a checkpoint.

  1. 01

    List the halls and doors

Each hall, wing, common room and exit on the walk. Pick how often checks run overnight.

  2. 02

    Post the codes

A sticker in each hall and by each door, where staff pass on the walk.

  3. 03

    Staff scan each round

With their own phone, PIN typed once a shift. Two seconds a stop.

Overnight checks

Every day · 10 PM – 6 AM · every hour

  • Missed checkpoints are emailed as each round ends, by name.

  • A round not started is emailed 15 minutes in, while there's time to act.

  • A Problem on any checklist needs a note, and is emailed to you as an incident.

What you get

Everything the record needs. Nothing to learn.

  • Rounds all night

Every 30 or 60 minutes overnight. Windows that cross midnight and daylight saving are handled.

  • Missed-check alerts

An email when a round ends with a hall unchecked, or 15 minutes in with nothing scanned.

  • Signed with staff PINs

Each person types their own PIN once a shift, so every check has a name on it.

  • SOS and welfare checks

One tap sends an urgent alert with location. Quiet too long, and someone's told.

  • Door and exit checks

OK/Problem checks at doors and exits. A Problem opens an incident straight away.

  • A log for the morning

A summary email at 7 AM, and a full report of the night to print or share by link.

Plus everything else in PatrolBadges: NFC tags, PINs, incident reports, offline scanning, CSV export and four sticker layouts. See all features

FAQ

Questions, answered.

The quickest answer is to try it: add your checkpoints and scan one from your phone in about two minutes. No card. Or ask us.

What are night checks or bed checks?

Night checks, also called bed checks or overnight rounds, are scheduled walks where staff make sure halls, rooms and exits are as they should be, then sign a log. Group homes, shelters, residential programs, dorms and camps all run them. PatrolBadges turns each check into a scan, so the log records who checked, when and where on its own.

Should we put a code in every room?

You can, but most places put one in each hall or wing and at each exit. Codes stay where staff pass anyway, and the count stays low. If you do tag rooms, name them by number, never by resident.

Is this a care record?

No. It records that a check happened, when, where and by whom, plus any incident staff report. It doesn't hold resident information, and it isn't a clinical record, a nurse call or a fall detector. Check your licensing rules for what an overnight log must include.

What about staff working alone overnight?

Every staff member has an SOS button on the checkpoint page: one tap and a confirm sends an urgent alert with their location to your alert list. Turn on welfare checks and you're emailed if anyone on duty goes 20 to 120 minutes (you choose) without a scan or an I'm OK tap. It runs in the phone's browser, so it can't detect a fall.

Can residents log checks with the codes?

Not with staff PINs on. Only someone with a PIN can log a check. Anyone else who scans can only report a problem, which comes to you as an incident.

Do staff need an app?

No. Staff point their phone's camera at the code, which opens the checkpoint in the browser. The first scan of a shift asks their name, or their PIN if you use PINs, and every scan after that logs on arrival. Nothing to install, so relief and agency staff can do the checks on their first night.
